Afghanistan and Kandahar’s History
Bearing the Burden of War
Afghanistan has endured decades of war and internal conflict, a tragedy that has affected all of its inhabitants but especially its women and children. Now the country seeks to mark a new path toward peace and prosperity. Despite many gains, the journey ahead is long and will require commitment and fortitude..
Continuing Challenges
As the news continues to report, Kandahar and the greater southern region of Afghanistan remain a volatile and poverty stricken place. One factor driving this instability is a lack of sustainable economic opportunities for young men, encouraging them to work for those who offer money for fighting. Once again women must bear the burden of war, as the number of young widows is on the rise and the overall lack of security has heightened the fears of women who not long ago were the biggest victims of strict and unreasonable rules and regulations under prior regimes.
Hopeful future
We believe that people will not give violence a chance when their basic needs of life are met and hope for greater opportunity is on the horizon. Kandahar Treasure is a big step towards helping women use their talents and passion for peace to meet such needs and create a more hopeful future.
